CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are searching for the person who shot a woman and a child inside a home in southwest Charlotte on Sunday morning.

Officers responded to a call for an assault with a deadly weapon around 4:30 a.m. at a home on Glory Meadow Court, located in the Planters Walk subdivision in the Steele Creek neighborhood.

“It makes you want to keep your doors locked, for sure,” neighbor Sue Stuckey said. “It makes you kind of nervous. You don’t know who did It.”

Upon arrival, officers said they found the woman and a 5-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds.

Officials told Channel 9 the woman was shot in the arm and the child was shot in the leg.

CMPD Capt. Rob Dance said they don't know for certain whether the victim knew the shooter, but investigators believe the home was targeted because of people the victim knew.

"This was not a random act of violence," Dance said.

The captain said that someone went to the apartment looking for something specific.

"It’s scary. It’s very scary,” Dance said. “You know, I understand why neighbors are concerned, and we too are concerned how someone like that could have shot a young child."

“It gives me goosebumps. It makes me feel horrible,” neighbor Maria Schittini said.

They are both expected to be OK.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said a K-9 unit responded to the scene and officers canvassed the area to find potential witnesses.

No arrests have been made at this point.

Channel 9 is asking police for a description of the suspect.

“It’s not in the norm (here) at all. This is the first,” Stuckey said.

Channel 9 learned that within a 1,000-foot radius of the shooting, there have been five incidents in the past six months: three larcenies and two reports of suspicious persons.

“I hope they figure out what happened, who did it, and take care of it,” Stuckey said.
