Surveillance video shows man pull gun, open fire inside popular South End bar

CHARLOTTE — Police are investigating after a man was shot inside a popular South End bar early Thursday.

Channel 9 crews were there around 1 a.m. as detectives investigated and set up crime scene tape outside Lost and Found on W. Bland Street.

Police said they responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call after a man was shot. The victim, Ryan Parsell, suffered serious injuries, according to CMPD.

“I was like, that’s crazy, but it’s a really crowded place, and maybe it’s just like, in this area, people carry guns,” Yasmine Campbell said.

She told Channel 9 she saw a fight and the subsequent shooting on the Snapchat story of a friend who was in the crowd. Campbell has been to the nightclub a few times but has never seen anything like what happened early Thursday.

Channel 9 received surveillance video from inside of the club, which shows the fight between two groups, and then it appears a bystander pulls a gun out and fires it.

Authorities said 25-year-old Deion Payne was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, among other charges.

Parsell posted on Instagram Thursday night that he was still in the hospital recovering.

Lost and Found shared a statement saying, “We pride ourselves on being a safe space. A place where people can come together.”

The bar also said it was “incredibly sad about” what happened and thanked its security team and the CMPD officers who were working that night.

Campbell said the shooting doesn’t change how she feels about going out in her neighborhood.

“That was Wednesday night, and now it’s Thursday night, and I’m already out,” she said.

But she questions why there was a gun in the bar to begin with.

“Maybe they shouldn’t be allowed in spaces or social spaces. Why do you need your gun when you are going out to have a good time, especially when you are going to a nightclub and you’re drinking? It just doesn’t mix well. You would never mix drinks and then go to a shooting range,” Campbell said.

No other details about the crime have been released.
