Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call around 12:15 a.m. and found Lucas suffering from a gunshot wound on the Matheson Avenue Overpass that spans the railroad tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Those who live at and visit NoDa said safety has never been a concern and are hopeful this deadly crime is an isolated incident.

"If it keeps happening in the same area a lot I'll probably avoid that area, but one thing doesn't make a trend. I trust the police force here and things happen," resident Ethan Schuttler said.

This type of crime is not normally seen is the NoDa area. Channel 9's Briana Harper pulled CMPD crime data and found no major crimes with a half mile from the deadly shooting scene.

Residents said they still plan to take the necessary precautions.

"I was shocked to hear somebody getting killed here. I'm normally going out with a group of friends and I like to think that I keep a vigilant eye out so that I'm not getting into situations like that," resident Tanna Nelson said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective.  Detective Fitch is the lead detective assigned to the case.  The public can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visit the Crime Stoppers website.
