CMPD: 15-year-old charged in man’s shooting death at Charlotte strip mall

CHARLOTTE — A 15-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 46-year-old man that happened on Dec. 14 along South Tryon Street at Clanton Road, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said on Tuesday.

His name has not been released due to his age.

“I heard about four or five shots, then I ran behind that red car,” shopper Sandra Jones told Channel 9 in December. “And when I looked up, there was two or three guys running that way.”

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene and could see dozens of officers at a shopping center. The man who was shot, 46-year-old Richard Marshall Jr., died at the scene, CMPD said.

“There appears to be several suspects,” CMPD Maj. Ryan Butler said. “Approximately, three involved with some kind of confrontation, altercation with the victim. Initially, out here around the sidewalk, bus stop area, and then moving into the middle of the strip mall.”

Police later released surveillance camera photographs of four people they said they were hoping to identify and find in connection with the slaying.

Anyone who recognizes the individuals in the photos should call 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Some store employees told Channel 9 that Marshall was a regular at the nearby Family Dollar, and he had just left the store prior to the shooting. They said he was a temporary worker and used the agency in the strip mall.

No further information has been released.
