Suspect in custody after deadly shooting at northeast Charlotte gas station

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says a suspect is in custody and facing a murder charge in connection with a homicide Tuesday night in northeast Charlotte.

Officers were called to the Citgo on West Sugar Creek Road near Cinderella Road at about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses inside the Citgo said someone was shot between the food mart and gas pumps.

On Thursday, CMPD said a suspect, identified as 45-year-old Earl Marcelius Likely, turned himself in after police got warrants for his arrest.

The victim in the shooting was identified by CMPD as 30-year-old Devin Simmons.

It’s not clear if Simmons and Likely knew each other before the shooting happened. A second victim, a 29-year-old woman, was also listed on a police report, but she wasn’t reported to be injured.

Likely is facing charges of murder and attempted murder. He was listed in custody at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center as of Thursday.
