CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a bank robbery at a SunTrust on Park Road in south Charlotte near the busy Park Road Shopping Center.

Police said the man approached the bank teller just after 9 a.m. Thursday, indicated he had a weapon and demanded money. Officers said the man fled the scene with money.

Police sent out a surveillance picture of the robber. It shows a man with a white shirt around his face, wearing a Charlotte Hornets hat.

Channel 9 anchor Blaine Tolison spoke to a woman who was inside a business across the street and said she saw the man running out of the bank with a T-shirt covering his face.

"I was just, like, shocked because I've never seen anything so first-hand. It's just crazy," said the woman who did not want to be identified.

The bank is right next to Park Road Shopping Center. There have been more than 50 crimes in and around the shopping center since the beginning of the year.

Most of the crimes are minor but there have been a few serious ones, including a robbery in April at CO and in March the shopping center banned a man accused of following and harassing families.

The robber is is described as a dark-skinned black man, about 30-35 years old, 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 250 pounds.

Anyone with information concerning the case or the robber is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
