CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers found broken glass scattered across the ground when they investigated the theft of thousands of dollars' worth of watches during a break-in at a jewelry store in the Arboretum shopping center.
The break-in happened just before 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at Brownlee Jewelers in the 8000 block of Providence Road, officials said.
Police said that there was $6,000 worth of damage done to the store's roof and the ceiling. Several glass casings, some filled with watches, were smashed. Police confirmed that $3,000 worth of Fossil and Citizen watches were stolen and $500 in other jewelry.

Reporter Gina Esposito spoke with the store’s manager, Heidi Holder, who said it will most likely remain closed for the day.
“It happened in the wee hours of the morning, and it has not happened at this location before as far as I know,” Holder said.
Officers are still searching for those responsible.
People who work in the area told Esposito that crime seems to be increasing.
Last month, someone threw a rock at the front of Cardinal Camera and stole Cannon and Sony cameras. The store has installed new security equipment since the break-in.
No arrests have been made in the case.
