CMPD: Four robbers assault victims in armed robbery outside popular south Charlotte gym

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is searching for four suspects after one person was shot and another person was pistol-whipped during an armed robbery in Ballantyne.

The robbery happened around 10:30 p.m. on Ardrey Kell Road near Johnson Road outside of Fitness Connection on Christmas Eve.

Police said four men ran up to a 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, demanding their things.

According to officials, the suspects hit the victims with their guns and then shot the woman.

The woman was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center, but both victims are expected to be OK.

Eyewitness News reporter Tina Terry spoke to the managers in the Fitness Connection, and they said the facility was closed on Christmas Eve.

It is unclear why the victims were at the scene Monday night.

Channel 9 spoke to neighbor Anoop Calia about the incident in Ballantyne.

"It is a good community...it's kind of rare, but it can be shocking" said Calia. "In this area, we're not exposed to the crime that is in a lot of other areas."

CMPD said the suspects got away with $400 and an iPhone.

Police told Channel 9 there were 108 violent crimes in 2017 and 119 violent crimes so far this year in the south division, which is up 10% from 2017.

No arrests have been made at this point.
