CMPD: Driver arrested after hitting 2 officers with car, leading police on chase

CHARLOTTE — A man was arrested after police said he led officers on a slow-speed chase for nearly an hour early Friday that ended in midtown Charlotte.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the suspect drove through a barricade on Briar Creek Road where an off-duty ABC officer was working.

The driver stopped after driving through the barrier, but police said he was acting very irrational. When they tried to detain him, they said he drove off, hitting at least two officers with his car.

Police then chased the white sedan for nearly an hour at speeds between 30-45 mph, blowing out the vehicle’s tires by using spike sticks, according to CMPD.

The pursuit eventually ended on Morehead Street near Interstate 77 and the driver was arrested. Channel 9 could see officers handcuffing the driver and putting him in the back of a CMPD cruiser.

By the end of the chase, the sedan was driving on its rims.

His name has not yet been released.

Police said no crashes happened during the pursuit and that the officers were not seriously injured.
