CHARLOTTE — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are investigating a death Thursday morning at a playground near Charlotte-Mecklenburg Virtual School in southwest Charlotte.

Channel 9 got to the scene on Nations Ford Road where police tape was wrapped around a parking lot and the playground area.

CMPD said shortly before 9 a.m. officers were called to the scene to investigate a death and found someone unresponsive. MEDIC transported them to Atrium Health Pineville where the victim died.

The incident did not affect classes. A CMS spokesperson said the playground is just off campus and students do not use it for recess.

Officials say the school did not go on lockdown and this did not impact school operations.

They sent a message to families notifying them of a police presence. It said classes will continue on a normal schedule and the safety of students is the top priority.

Homicide detectives are conducting the investigation. Crime Scene Search collected physical evidence.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
