CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Emergency crews had to temporarily shut down Interstate 77 Wednesday morning after a multi-vehicle crash involving two Charlotte-Mecklenburg police cruisers and a dump truck.

The crash happened around 6 a.m. in the southbound lanes between Sunset Road and Interstate 85, closing the interstate for nearly two hours.

Channel 9 crews could see a CMPD cruiser with heavy front-end damage, along with a dump truck. A white SUV was also seen being towed from the scene.

CMPD said the accident happened when officers were responding to help the Highway Patrol with a single-car crash just after 6 a.m. Officials said the driver of the dump truck caused the collision that involved two CMPD cruisers and another vehicle.

Police said both patrol cars were stationary with their blue lights on when the crash happened. An officer was in one of the cruisers at the time and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries to be evaluated.

The crash is still under investigation.
