CMS police officer charged with indecent liberties with a minor

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department charged Charlotte Mecklenburg School Police Officer William Stitt with indecent liberties with a minor, CMPD said in a news release.

The charges stem from a criminal investigation which began on Monday and revealed that Stitt inappropriately touched and fondled a known victim on Friday, police said.

The victim in this case was not someone that Stitt would have come into contact with during the scope of his employment.

On Tuesday, detectives signed a warrant for the arrest of Stitt.

Earlier in the evening, the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Stitt without incident, police said.

William Stitt was hired as a CMS police officer on Aug.1, 2005.  Due to the seriousness of the charges, CMS has placed Stitt on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal charges, police said.

Stitt is a former Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.  He was hired by the department on Sept. 28, 1977 and retired on July 1, 2005.

Anyone with information concerning this case or the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
