CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Cold Case Sexual Assault Unit has charged a man with raping two teenage girls in 1990 and 1994.

Officials announced Wednesday that Warren Caldwell, 56, was arrested last week.

He is charged with two counts of second-degree rape, common law robbery and one count of first-degree kidnapping.

A DNA match led detectives to identify Caldwell, who is a registered sex offender.

Caldwell was convicted in 2002 of indecent liberties with a child, which took place in 1995. Police said he has been arrested more than 50 times in the past, but was not incarcerated at the time of his arrest last week.

Detectives said the victims were 17 and 18 years old at the time of the attacks.

The first crime took place on Oct. 16, 1990 when the 18-year-old victim told police she was sexually assaulted by the suspect in the middle of the night.

Police said Campbell also attacked a 17-year-old girl on Feb. 4, 1994 while she was waiting at a bus stop on North Tryon Street. The victim told officers the suspect pulled up in his car and forced her into it before driving her to another location and sexually assaulting her and letting her go.

DNA evidence led to a match and Campbell was arrested without incident on March 1.
