CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Animal Control unit finished the year off with a 90% save rate for animals at the shelter.

“That 90% is something we’ve been working for years,” said Melissa Knicely, Public Information Specialist for CMPD’s Animal Care & Control unit.

Knicely has been at the shelter for 13 years and she told our Anthony Kustura that she never thought it could happen.

Nine out of ten animals either reunited with their owners or went on to find their new forever homes.

Before they reached the save rate, most animals that came into a Charlotte shelter had a slim chance of surviving.

Knicely said all that has changed thanks to community support and adoption events. She said COVID-19 also highlighted the need for a companion.

The animal control department posted a video to social media with the great news.

“I kind of want to dance a little bit because it’s so exciting,” said Knicely.
