CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said they suspect excessive speed contributed to a fatal crash in north Charlotte Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded to the accident on Ridge Road near Mallard Creek Road just after 4 p.m.
According to CMPD, officials found a burgundy Harley-Davidson motorcycle and pronounced 65-year-old Phillip Reed dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police the motorcycle was traveling around a curve heading south on Ridge Road at a high speed. After crossing the center line, they said the rider applied his brakes, skidded and was ejected, striking a guardrail.
CMPD said alcohol impairment was not suspected.
