CHARLOTTE — A revamped airport overlook is expected to debut in 2024 with a full slate of amenities.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport provided an update today on that project, which will include features such as an expanded food-truck staging area, playgrounds and, of course, ample room to watch planes take off and land.
The permanent site will mark the fifth dedicated overlook at CLT since 1937, the airport says on its website. It will remain on airport property, just west of the previous location off Marshall Drive.
That location was open from 1989 to last October. It was displaced by construction of a taxiway project and future fourth parallel runway, which is expected to open in 2027.
A temporary overlook at the corner of Old Dowd Road and Airport Overlook Drive will remain open until the new location debuts.
The overlook has become a popular spot in Charlotte over the decades for plane watchers. The new location will continue to provide airfield, skyline and terminal views, the airport says.
