CLOSURES & DELAYS: Several school districts modify Monday instruction due to weather

Several local school districts have modified classroom instruction on Monday due to road conditions. Their decisions came as a cold rain system swept through the area, turning to a wintry mix in some areas. Temperatures were near freezing in most counties, so the wet conditions had potential to become slick in some areas.

Here are local districts’ plans for Monday:

Return here for the latest updates from the districts.

Alexander County Schools

Due to deteriorating road conditions, Alexander County Schools will operate remotely for students and staff Monday, February 7, 2022.

Cabarrus County Schools

Monday will be an Asynchronous Remote Learning Day for Cabarrus County Schools due to inclement weather impacting our area. Students should visit their school’s website for instructions and information about classes and assignments. Employees should visit the Finance Department website for reporting instructions.

All afternoon activities, including athletic games, practices, and recreation facility usage, will continue as scheduled.

Caldwell County Schools

Upon further review of the driving conditions, Monday will be an Optional Planning Day. Students will not be in school Monday. Please be safe!

Catawba County Schools

Due to continued icy and potentially hazardous road conditions during our morning commute hours, especially for buses and student drivers, there will now be no school for students (and no QUEST) Feb. 7 with an optional workday for staff.

Cleveland County Schools

Cleveland County is under a Winter Weather Advisory that was issued at 4 a.m. Monday. Therefore, Cleveland County Schools will operate on a 3-hour delay for students Monday, February 7. Staff may report on a 2-hour delay or earlier if conditions are safe enough for travel. All schools will begin the day exactly three hours later than the regular start time. Morning bus pickup times will occur three hours later than normal, and Kidz Around before-school care will also delay three hours. We will continue monitoring conditions and notify you if any additional changes are necessary.

Hickory Public Schools

Due to the forecast of potential freezing rain and icy conditions this morning, Hickory Public Schools will operate on a 3 hour delay for students and staff Monday, February 7th 2022. The uncertainty of the forecast may force the district to update the status of HPS if conditions do not improve. Any decision that impacts the remainder of the day will be announced by 9 a.m.

Kannapolis City Schools

With some freezing rain and temperatures hovering near freezing Monday morning, KCS will be operating on a 2-hour delay for staff and students. School Nutrition staff should plan to report on their regular schedule.

Lincoln County Schools

LCS will operate on a 3-hour delay Monday, Feb 7. As of 4 a.m. Lincoln County entered a Winter Weather Advisory and it is raining or is projected to rain in parts of the county until later in the morning with temps below freezing. Out of an abundance of caution with black ice concerns, we will delay school for 3 hours for students and staff. High Schools will report to third period. Essential staff are needed when they can safely arrive to prepare the buildings, sidewalks, etc.

This is a developing story. Check back for more updates.
