Climate-change protesters shut down Wells Fargo's HQ branch

SAN FRANCISCO — Several bank branches temporarily closed their doors in San Francisco's financial district Wednesday as climate-change protesters blocked their entrances, part of a campaign urging banks to stop financing the fossil fuels industry.

Wells Fargo & Co. found itself the center of attention since its headquarters is in the heart of the district. But Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Citibank Inc. were among the banks that saw nearby branches shut down by protesters, who were locking arms through tubes to block entrances.

"I am out here because it's 93 degrees in San Francisco on Sept. 25, and Chase is the No. 1 investor in dirty oil, fossil fuel infrastructure and new development," said Kathryn Sterbenc, who was protesting with Extinction Rebellion outside a Chase branch.

San Francisco resident Doug Neilsen locked arms with fellow protesters, blocking the entrance to Wells Fargo's headquarters branch.

"Wells Fargo is one of the leading investors in the fossil fuels industry," Neilsen said in explaining why he planned to spend most of the workday there.
