GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Police said a man and a woman are in custody after shooting a store clerk during an attempted robbery in Gaston County.
According to officers, the suspects went inside the Stanley Corner Stop on Mariposa Road around 10:45 a.m. to rob it, but ended up shooting the clerk when he tried to stop them.

Police said a witness called 911 and gave a description of the suspects after they ran out of the store.
The pair was spotted by officers near the scene and immediately arrested.
Police said the suspects tossed the gun used in the robbery onto the railroad tracks near the store.
The clerk is being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg, but is expected to be OK.
