Weddington Christian Academy officials in Union County told Channel 9 it will be closed Friday after a possible norovirus outbreak.
School officials said 30 percent of the students are sick with a gastro-intestinal illness.
The school will be deep-cleaned Friday and they are not sure if it will stay closed on Monday.
Officials at the school said they're working with the Union County Health Department to determine how to best clean the school to get rid of the virus.
Norovirus is highly contagious and is characterized by nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea and abdominal pain.
The administration posted the following message for parents on the school's website:
Please know your child must be fever and symptom free 48 hours before returning to school. This is a highly contagious infection. It is characterized by nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, and in some cases, loss of taste. A person usually develops symptoms of gastroenteritis 12 to 48 hours after being exposed to this infection. Please use proper hand washing procedures at home and bleach products for sanitizing at least twice daily.
Thank you for your patience through this difficult time, and most importantly, thank you for your prayers. We will advise you if there is a need for any further instruction.
