Leaders activate Charlotte warming shelter ahead of winter storm

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management has activated an emergency warming shelter ahead of the snowfall that’s expected to hit the city.

Officials determined that partnering shelters were expected to exceed total capacity since snow had been forecasted for Charlotte.

The emergency shelter opened at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Grady Cole Center, located on the Central Piedmont Community College Campus, and will close at noon on Thursday.

The shelter is open to everyone, including couples, families and individuals with service animals.

American Red Cross volunteers will operate the shelter with assistance from the Mecklenburg County staff. The Red Cross will also provide cots, blankets, meals and snacks.

  • Salvation Army Center of Hope - 534 Spratt Street, Charlotte
  • Men's Shelter of Charlotte - 1210 North Tryon Street, Charlotte
  • Urban Ministry Center (Room in the Inn) - 945 North College Street, Charlotte
