City council approves resolution to name I-85 bridge after CMPD officer killed in line of duty

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte City Council unanimously approved a resolution in support of the NCDOT naming a bridge after a fallen Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer.

The council voted Monday to name a bridge that crosses Interstate 85 after University Division Officer Mia Goodwin. The bridge is near W.T. Harris Boulevard.

Officer Goodwin was killed in the line of duty in 2021 when she was hit by a truck driver in that area. She died on Dec. 22, 2021, just days after returning from maternity leave and days before Christmas.

Police said that day, a semi-truck collided with the cab of a semi that was heading south on the interstate. That collision then caused them to crash into CMPD units who were working another crash scene, investigators said. Goodwin, 33, was killed and three other officers were hurt.

CMPD said it has charged one of the truck drivers, 50-year-old Daniel Leon Morgan, for his involvement in the deadly crash. He was indicted by a grand jury in January and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 27.
