CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new grocery store and hundreds of apartments will soon be built in one Steele Creek neighborhood.
The Charlotte City Council unanimously passed a vote Monday night to move ahead on development.
Some Steele Creek neighbors do not want more growth because many spots in the area are already new such as a grocery store, restaurants, hotels and apartments -- all right across the street from the spot where the new development would be built.
The developer who is buying the land wants to build 4,500 square feet of restaurants and shops.
The plan also includes up to 230 apartments and grocery stores.
Last month, the council listened to neighbors who said they want less housing.
Neighbors also asked the developer to beautify the project and make the design more creative.
They want the final plans to include fountains and walking trails, not a shopping center, flanked with a jumble of parking lots.
The zoning committee has already voted to unanimously approve the project.
