CHARLOTTE — The city of Charlotte will charge for street parking until 10 p.m. in South End and Uptown starting Tuesday.
The Charlotte Department of Transportation made the announcement on social media this summer, and signage started going up on Aug. 1.
Starting Tuesday, you’ll have to pay for any non-private street parking spaces until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Up until this change, parking was free after 6 p.m.
South End resident Drew Nations says he gets why the city would expand the paid parking period.
“I guess there’s a limited number of spots, and they’re going to charge for them, I wish they wouldn’t,” Nations said.
The city says it hopes to “improve parking turnover during peak hours, manage long-term parking needs, and enhance public safety by ensuring compliance with parking regulations.”
Lance Peterman says he doesn’t frequent Center City, but when he is here, it’s for an event. Like this past holiday weekend.
“If that’s a regular thing then that might factor into my decision as to where to attend an event,” Peterman said.
He’s concerned this expansion to paid street parking could have further implications.
It costs $1.50 per hour, and you’ve got a maximum of two hours in a spot.
Warnings will be issued for violators up until Sept. 14. Fines will begin on Sept. 16.
You can pay for parking with the ParkMobile app, or by calling 1-877-727-5730.
