CHARLOTTE — Deputies in Chester County are searching for a man after they said a couple led police on a high-speed chase from Charlotte to South Carolina Monday evening.

Authorities said it started in north Charlotte when Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police noticed the license plate on a car came up as a stolen vehicle out of Virginia. Police tried to pull the car -- a white Ford Crown Victoria -- over but the driver refused to stop.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom was overhead as police followed the vehicle from Charlotte to York County and then into Chester County. The car could be seen speeding and swerving between other vehicles on Interstates 485 and 77.

According to deputies, the chase reached speeds of 115 mph. The car eventually came to a stop on Deer Branch Road in Chester County, just south of the the Fort Lawn area near Highway 21.

Authorities said a man -- identified as Gage Plourde, from Ridgeway, Virginia -- and a woman, 30-year-old Hope Smith, got out and ran into the woods. York County and Chester County deputies set up a perimeter and searched the area near High Tower Road.

On Tuesday, officials said Smith had been captured but Plourde remained at large.

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office said it is not conducting an active manhunt for Plourde, but is actively pursuing leads. Officials were asking the community to secure their vehicles, remain vigilant and report any sightings of Plourde to 911.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said its helicopter assisted South Carolina authorities for a brief period.
