CHARLOTTE — Chopper 9 Skyzoom was over a SWAT situation in north Charlotte Friday afternoon, and Channel 9 learned that a suspect has been taken into custody peacefully.
Dozens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg police cars could be seen outside a home on Oakdale Road near Dale Avenue.
The suspect’s girlfriend arrived, parked her car and rushed to the scene to meet with officers and negotiators.
“Come on out. Let’s get this over with,” the woman told her boyfriend.
Her boyfriend, George Wesley Benfield, listened.
“He only came out because I came,” she said.

Benfield was wanted for a warrant outside of Mecklenburg County.
Benfield’s sister told Channel 9 that she was thankful that the police didn’t use force to get into the home, which could have led to possible injury or worse.
“Ultimately, it would have caused hurt on us,” she said.
