Troopers: Driver who hit, killed 7-year-old boy will likely not face charges

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers say the driver accused of hitting and killing a child in Rowan County late Friday night will likely not face charges.

The crash happened just after 10:30 p.m. on Highway 152 near Deal Road and Dandy Lane.

Troopers said a 22-year-old woman was driving a small SUV that was traveling east on North Carolina Highway 152 when a 7-year-old boy ran into the road and was hit.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family spoke to Channel 9's DaShawn Brown and described him as "goofy" and "full of sunshine."

"I heard the sirens and stuff last night and the next thing I know, I get this phone call this morning and my mom is like 'He's passed,'" cousin Brandie Moose said. "He was the sweetest little boy. He was so full of sunshine. He'd put a smile on your face. He's goofy, oh my God. That kid, he was something else."

Another driver said he noticed the crash on his way home from work, so he stopped to help.

"Just trying to do what I could do," driver Jessee Parham said. "What any good citizen would do."

Parham said he is still shaken up.

"Not good, I couldn't sleep last night," Parham said. "It's just upsetting for anybody and my prayers just go out to the families of both people. The people in the car and the child's family because in that situation, all you can do is pray to God and hope that both sides find peace, you know."

Troopers said they investigated and determined the driver was going under the speed limit at the time of the crash. No charges will be filed.
