Deputy hurt in crash during high-speed chase in Chesterfield County

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — A Chesterfield County deputy was hurt after crashing during a high-speed chase Sunday, officials said.

Deputies were responding to reports of a man pointing a gun at people on Bailey Saw Mill Road. When they got to the scene, the suspect, William Oliver, was driving a Jeep and deputies tried to pull him over.

Oliver refused to stop, leading deputies on a chase during which he pointed a rifle at them. Authorities said the pursuit continued through the town of Chesterfield, where a deputy collided with a town officer.

The deputy was airlifted to Atrium Health in Charlotte. His condition has not been released.

Oliver then reportedly drove into oncoming traffic, crashing his Jeep. He was also flown to Charlotte with serious injuries.

Oliver is charged with several counts of pointing and presenting a firearm, numerous driving offenses, possession of a weapon by a convinced felon and attempted murder.

No other details have been released at this point.
