Checkers, Knights consider ways to team up for winter events

CHARLOTTE — Executives from the Charlotte Checkers and the Charlotte Knights told CBJ this week they are open to the idea of having the hockey team play at an outdoor rink in the baseball stadium.

This week as Knights Chief Operating Officer Dan Rajkowski greeted season-ticket holders and sponsors entering Truist Field for a World Series party, he took a few minutes to look at the ballpark’s outfield. A temporary, full-sized ice rink and a 150-foot slide for snow tubing have just been installed.

Beginning Nov. 23 and ending Jan. 6, the Knights, the Triple A affiliate of the MLB Chicago White Sox, will host the biggest version to date of “Light the Knights.”

That holiday event began in 2020 with hot chocolate, vendors and decorations — and is expanding this year to include skating and tubing.

Rajkowski told CBJ that discussions are continuing with the Checkers, the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL Florida Panthers, about crossover events this holiday season.

Possibilities include having the Checkers stage a practice or two at the outdoor rink; leading a skills clinic for youth players; hosting a skate-along with Checkers players; or, perhaps, a combination of those.
