CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — A crash in Cleveland County, North Carolina, began as a high-speed chase out of York County, South Carolina, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Authorities were called to York Road near Sabre Road at around 4 a.m. Thursday, which is just south of Kings Mountain, troopers said.
A Channel 9 crew could see a pickup truck that was overturned and badly damaged. The truck had run off the road and down into the woods beside York Road.
North Carolina troopers said the driver of the truck was being chased at a “high speed” by Clover police out of York County.
According to Clover police, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop for a possible DUI on the truck driven by Steven Davis.
They said that’s when the chase began. Police said speeds reached 100 mph on Highway 161 outside of Clover.
The chase was terminated at the North Carolina state line before the crash occurred, according to Clover police.

Officers said Davis was conscious and alert before he was removed from the truck and flown to the hospital. He was in critical condition after the crash and was the only person in the truck, according to authorities.
Clover police said they obtained warrants on Davis for failing to stop for police in South Carolina, but the North Carolina Highway Patrol would investigate the crash.
By 6 a.m., crews began loading the truck onto a tow truck. York Road was blocked as crews worked to clear the scene.
Troopers said the crash investigation is ongoing.
