CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In sports, team is just another word for family.
Myles and Torin Dorn are quite the team.
They are brothers, playing two different sports, with an unbreakable bond.
In the weight room at their alma mater, Vance High School, the Dorn brothers are together, preparing for their next individual chapters.
Torin Dorn is a 6-foot-6 guard on North CarolinaState’s basketball team, while Myles Dorn is a junior safety on the University of North Carolina’s football team.
“We work extremely hard together so that when we get into our respective fields, we can shine separately,” Torin Dorn said.
Torin Dorn recently declared for next month’s NBA Draft.
Myles Dorn said their bond is tighter than any rivalry.
“I don’t think people know how close we are when they ask about the N.C. State-Carolina thing,” Myles Dorn said.
While the colleges they represent are fierce rivals, Torin Dorn said they always help each other excel.
“People ask me if I junk talk my brother,” Torin Dorn said. “The school stuff is going to fade away, but the family is always going to be there.”
“That’s my brother. That’s blood,” Myles Dorn said. “He was with me before the Carolina-N.C. State thing.”
From the depths of healthy competition grew a loving admiration of each other’s games.
“His intensity is something I really admire,” Torin Dorn said. “Hopefully, I can take some of that and implement it into my game. He puts in countless hours and I feel obligated to do the same.”
They constantly push each other in workouts to make each other better.
“He really pushes me to give everything I have,” Myles Dorn said.
But everything’s a competition between the brothers, who never lose sight of their respective NBA and NFL aspirations.
“I will call him and he will call me, and we talk about, ‘What if we play in the same city? What do we have to do in order to secure that spot?'” Torin Dorn said.
“We have to speak (our dreams) into existence,” Myles Dorn said. “If we don’t believe it, who else will? This is something we can attain.”
