Charlotte Symphony makes ‘gut-wrenching decision’ to cancel Summer Pops series

The Charlotte Symphony’s popular Summer Pops series has fallen victim to COVID-19.

The orchestra has canceled or postponed 39 performances through the end of June, including all indoor and outdoor events.

“It was a gut-wrenching decision to say we won’t have that series this summer,” says Michelle Hamilton, interim CEO.

“Fiscally, it just did not to make sense to invest in a series we would not be able to pull off.”

The Summer Pops series is held on Sundays at Symphony Park in SouthPark, culminating with its Celebrate America program and fireworks. It has been a staple since 1983. Community concerts are also held across the Charlotte region.

Hamilton talked with CBJ about the decision and what comes next; read the full story here.
