CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tennessee will face West Virginia to start the 2028 college football season at Bank of America Stadium, the Charlotte Sports Foundation announced Tuesday. The game is a Charlotte rematch for the schools. In 2018, they played here in front of 67,000 fans, a near-sellout at the 75,000-capacity stadium. West Virginia won, 40-14, behind quarterback Will Grier, who is now a backup with the stadium’s main tenant: the NFL Carolina Panthers.
The game will be billed as the Duke’s Mayo Classic, part of a new sponsorship agreement of Charlotte’s bowl game and kickoff college games signed last year.
