Charlotte to receive stimulus money to help struggling families

CHARLOTTE — The city of Charlotte will be receiving millions of dollars from the federal stimulus, and leaders will develop relief programs for residents with that money.

The city is expecting $3.4 million in community-development block grant money.

There will be $1.2 million dedicated to mortgage relief for 350 families earning up to 80% areas medium income, which is about $63,000 for a family of four.

About $1.1 million will be dedicated to rent relief for 350 families in that same income range.

Another $1.1 million will be used to help up to 700 people who are homeless with security deposits.

Around $175,000 will be used to help 250 families with utility payments

The city of Charlotte is also creating a $1 million -grant program for microbusinesses, which are businesses in Charlotte with fewer than five employees.
