Charlotte ranks high in rental evictions, study says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Six of every 100 renters in Charlotte get evicted, according to a new study.

“I've been living out of the car for over two years now,” a woman, who did not want to be identified, said. “It's turned my life upside-down."

"Many times, we've seen people go to 25 apartment complexes before someone would let them in," said Carol Hardison, who is the head of Crisis Assistance Ministry.

Her agency is the last stop before homelessness.

The study shows that Charlotte's eviction rate is almost twice as high as the rate in similar-sized cities in the Southeast. The Queen City is ranked No. 21 in the nation, ahead of Atlanta, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham.

Charlotte's apartment building boom gets some of the blame.

"Rents are soaring in this community and you can see it by the number of people coming in our lobby facing eviction," Hardison said.
