Charlotte Motor Speedway to welcome evacuees from Florence

As Hurricane Florence continues to approach the Carolina coast, the Charlotte Motor Speedway announced it will be welcoming evacuees onto its property to ride out the storm.

Speedway officials said they will be opening the Rock City Campground beginning at noon on Tuesday for evacuees heading west or inland from Florence.

Officials said evacuees will have access to bathhouse facilities on the property throughout their stay.

"While the Charlotte area is not completely out of the region that could face the effects of Hurricane Florence, for many of our neighbors to the east, it is safer alternative or a good stopping point as they seek shelter elsewhere," Charlotte Motor Speedway executive vice president Greg Walter said.

Officials ask evacuees to check in at the Camping World Racing Resort office.

The office can be accessed at the entrance to zMAX Dragway.

Evacuees that arrive after hours are advised to call the speedway's Guest Services at 704-507-5612.

"We look forward to welcoming anyone who needs a place to stop and to showing them the hospitality they deserve as we ride out this storm together," Walter said.
