CHARLOTTE — For the past two years, the Atlantic Coast Conference has held its baseball championship tournament at Truist Field in Charlotte. Recent discussions with executives from the ACC and the Charlotte Knights, the Triple-A team that owns the ballpark, made clear the likelihood of a return engagement — soon.
On Oct. 5, the ACC announced that Durham Bulls Athletic Park, home of the Knights’ International League rival Durham Bulls, will host the baseball championship next year. It’s scheduled for May 23-28.
Charlotte Knights Chief Operating Officer Dan Rajkowski previously told CBJ that the Bulls and Knights had submitted a proposal to the ACC to alternate as host sites. Durham has hosted seven of the past 13 tournaments, according to the ACC. But ACC executives have been pleased with Charlotte’s return as a baseball site.
“It’s been a winning combination so far,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips told CBJ during a visit here this month, referring to Durham and Charlotte hosting recent tournaments. He said tournament sites are chosen year by year.
He remains confident Charlotte will be selected by the ACC for the baseball tournament in 2024.
