Charlotte Independence kicks off new era at renovated Memorial Stadium

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Independence soccer club is hosting a grand reopening at the newly renovated American Legion Memorial Stadium on Wednesday.

The team will take on the New York Red Bulls II at 7 p.m.

The first 1,000 fans will receive a commemorative mini soccer ball, and Chick-fil-A will be onsite giving away free toy cows.

To mark the special occasion, fireworks will also follow the game.

Mecklenburg County, which owns the stadium, unveiled the refurbished facility last month, marking the end of a nearly two-year construction project that cost $40.5 million.

The stadium, which first opened in 1936, now features a synthetic turf certified by FIFA, a state-of-the-art press box, family bathrooms and concession areas. The design also allows for food trucks to set up at either entrance of the stadium.

The Independence will play the remainder of their home games at the stadium through October. See the home schedule below.
