CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Hornets filled the Spectrum Center lobby, assembling 3,000 care kits for U.S. service members Tuesday.
It’s an event the organization has held for 11 years.
Alongside volunteers from presenting partner Novant Health, Hornets ownership, players, and staff members spent nearly an hour assembling the kits.
Each care kit will include hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and soap, as well as a variety of snacks.
They also included handwritten notes, which added a personal touch.
“Being able to see that their community is behind them and is willing to support them and is willing to think about them while they’re away from their family, while they’re away from their friends, it really does mean so much to people,” said Technical Sergeant Barbara Kornegay with the U.S. Air Force.
“It feels small here, but it means so much more to them,” said Charlotte Hornets forward Cody Martin. “I’m grateful to be a part of that.”

The kits will be distributed by the United Service Organizations of North Carolina to service members preparing for and returning from deployment at Fort Liberty and Camp Lejeune.
