Charlotte FC rallies to win, 2-1, against Vancouver Whitecaps FC

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte FC rallied in the 85th minute with a goal to take the win against the Vancouver Whitecaps at the Bank of America Stadium on Sunday.

The Vancouver Whitecaps were quick to make a goal in the second minute. Vancouver forward Tosaint Ricketts landed a goal in the bottom left corner to get past Charlotte’s goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina.

Charlotte FC made a comeback soon after with an eighth minute header from forward Andre Shinyashiki to the left corner to even out the score. Shinyashiki was assisted by Karol Swiderski with a cross.

There were several attempts missed by both teams, with two major attempts by mid-fielder Jordy Alcívar who shot from outside the box. Defender Harrison Afful also attempted a header.

Just as it seemed the game would end in a tie, Charlotte FC forward Daniel Ríos landed a left-footed shot to the bottom left corner of the net to win the game.

Need To Know

  • Previous to this match, Vancouver had won its last three matches against expansion sides and lost just one of its last eight matches against league newcomers dating back to 2017 (W5 D2). The Whitecaps had lost only one away match against an expansion team, falling 2-1 at fellow newcomers Portland in August 2011.
  • Charlotte’s 2-0 defeat to CF Montréal on Saturday ended a four-match home winning streak.
