CHARLOTTE — Charlotte FC is going next level. Make that Next level, as in Major League Soccer’s Next Pro circuit, the equivalent of Triple A minor-league baseball — a feeder league for the sport’s highest tier.

Executives from Charlotte FC and MLS Next Pro confirmed to CBJ that Charlotte FC will field an MLS Next Pro team beginning in 2023. Much is still undecided, including, most notably, what the new team’s name will be and where it will play. Those decisions are expected to be made by this fall.
Charlotte FC started its first MLS season in February.

Darrius Barnes, a Raleigh native and Duke University alum who played eight seasons in MLS, has been named president of Charlotte FC’s new team.
