“We have never revealed my sister’s name. Her name is Carol Ann Kyaw,” Linda Roberts said. “She loved the beach, she always loved going to the beach.”

Roberts has a lot of fond memories of her sister, but at 62 years old, Kyaw suffered from onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Her family said she spent her final months at Crown Colony in Mooresville, where they said Earnest Betty Jr., an employee, sexually assaulted her.

“How could you prey on someone who trusted you?” Roberts asked.

The nursing home reported the assault and Mooresville police arrested Beatty in February 2016. He was released on bond and in October, Kyaw died.

“It was tough to see her go downhill, but I really believe that contributed,” Roberts said.

Kyaw’s family wants justice, but they said the system at the Iredell County Courthouse has been slow.

“I can’t understand why this guy’s case keeps getting continued and continued and continued. It’s just beyond me,” Roberts said.

She wants Beatty to face a judge on the sexual assault charges, and she said she owes it to her sister to keep fighting.

“I remember her hold on to me saying, ‘I’m scared,’ and I said, 'As long as I’m here, you never have to be scared,'” Roberts said.
