To honor the lives lost, City of Charleston leaders designated one day for each victim following the June 17 shooting.
“I’m still dealing with it,” said Bethane Middleton-Brown, who is Middleton-Doctor’s sister. “I'm not to where I can take one day at a time yet. I'm still taking one breath at a time.”
Bethane Middleton-Brown resides in Charlotte, along with her husband and now-seven children.
Following her sister Depayne’s death, Middleton-Brown also welcomed her children into their home.
“It truly is a family that love built,” she said.
Middleton-Brown spoke of her sister’s love for music, which will be among the building blocks of a future foundation in her honor.
Middleton-Brown said she’s also entering the grief process, nearly two years after the shooting, followed by federal trial and conviction of the shooter.
“For a long time, I had dry tears,” she said. “I don't have the distractions. I can finally grieve.”
