CHARLOTTE — Charlotte Douglas International Airport added $32 billion to North Carolina’s economy in 2021, up from $25 billion two years earlier, according to a newly released study from the state transportation department. That represents an increase of 7%.
Charlotte Douglas, known as CLT, is North Carolina’s largest airport, and home of American Airlines Group Inc.’s second-largest hub. The airport is owned by city government.

The state report analyzes data and investments by airports and the aviation industry across North Carolina. The state’s 72 airports generated $72 billion in jobs and related spending, equal to 11% of North Carolina’s overall gross domestic product, the economic measure of all goods and services.
