CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina’s Triangle region, with its highly regarded universities and strong tech sector, has perhaps been perceived as more of a hotbed for startups than Charlotte. So it’s a bit surprising to see a recent study’s ranking of the top 20 cities for startups in the U.S.
In an effort to gauge how well the local business environment encourages entrepreneurial activity, commercial real estate information services provider, Commercial Cafe, developed a ranking of best cities for startups based on 13 different factors. Those metrics include startup survival rate, startup density, kickstarter success, wage growth and coworking cost.

For each metric, the number of maximum points was evenly distributed between the lowest and the highest metric values. On this scale, a score was calculated for each city, based on its metric values.
The Charlotte metro, with its overall score of 55.86, ranked ahead of Raleigh. Check out this slideshow to see how the top 20 cities stack up.
