Charlotte area’s best places for retirees are in the suburbs, per ranking

Davidson is the top local place for retirees according to the latest Niche rankings

CHARLOTTE — The suburbs reign supreme when it comes to the best places to retire in the Charlotte metro area.

That’s according to the latest set of rankings by Niche, which again listed Davidson as the top local place for retirees, followed by Tega Cay, Pineville, India Hook and Westport. Lake locales, in particular, proved to be popular in this ranking.

The Charlotte metro, however, wasn’t well-represented in the national ranking, with Davidson taking the highest spot locally at No. 597.

Across the Carolinas, several places scored higher for retirees than in the Charlotte area. That includes coastal destinations such as Pine Knoll Shores, St. James, Carolina Shores and Sunset Beach in North Carolina, as well as Garden City, Murrells Inlet and Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.

Ranking and review site Niche assessed how desirable areas are for retirees using 15-plus factors that include weather, crime rates, number of residents 65 and older, housing costs and access to restaurants, golf courses, exercise facilities and doctors.
