CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A massive $200 million investment project is officially coming to Charlotte.
City leaders approved Project Quattro for Amazon in a unanimous vote Monday night.
The project will be built on 108 acres near the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Amazon will employ about 1,500 workers after it is complete.
City leaders voted to provide a $13.4 million incentive deal to Amazon.
Councilman James Mitchell said the center will be a unique, automated distribution facility with average salaries ranging from $25,000 to $45,000 a year.
He said those jobs will be in place by 2019.
“This is great benefits with a great company,” Mitchell said.
He said it takes away some of the sting felt after Charlotte wasn't named a finalist for Amazon's second headquarters.
The city asked the e-commerce giant to facilitate a special outreach and train and recruit residents from the west side of the city, Mitchell said.
Vidal Jones applied for a job at Amazon's other west Charlotte distribution center and hopes to land one at the new facility if that doesn't work out.
“It's a far-out company, if I am honest with you, because they give everybody an equal opportunity,” Jones said.
The city also voted to sell the land to the firm negotiating the agreement for more than $7 million.
Mitchell said Amazon is planning to build six automated distribution centers and Charlotte will be the first city to get one.
