Charlotte adding drop off sites to recycle solar panels

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

CHARLOTTE — Mecklenburg County businesses and residents now have the option to recycle their old or damaged solar panels.

The county is setting up a drop-off site at the Compost Central recycling center in Northwest Charlotte, with four other locations in Mecklenburg County opening in the coming weeks.

This is part of a six-month pilot program started in partnership with SolarPanelRecycling.com, a Salisbury, N.C.-based company, and the Solar Energy Industries Association.

The companies plan to expand the program nationally after using North Carolina, the fourth-ranked state in national solar capacity, to determine a blueprint.

The solar panel recycling facility can extract glass and materials from electronic components to be reused and keep them out of landfills.
