Charges dropped against city councilman, 2 others, arrested during George Floyd protests

Braxton Winston

CHARLOTTE — Prosecutors dropped charges against people in Charlotte who got arrested during the protests that followed the death of George Floyd.

Charlotte City Councilman and activist Braxton Winston was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor after failing to disperse when police told the crowd at a protest to do so.

The reason why charges have been dropped is because courts were closed for several months because of the pandemic, officials said. Officials said the court system is focused charges connected with violent crimes.

“It is not likely that we will proceed on many other misdemeanor cases, and that is not limited to the events of May and June 2020,” the District Attorney’s Office said.

Three protesters, including Winston, ACLU activist Kristie Puckett and Katherine Wolff, have had their charges dropped, so far.
