Charges dropped against Catawba Co. assistant D.A.

CATABWA COUNTY, N.C.,None — The charges have been dropped against a Catawba County Assistant District Attorney accused of cycling while drunk.

Police arrested Eric Bellas, 45, last summer while he was at a convention on the North Carolina coast.

Sunset Beach police charged the Catawba County district attorney with driving while impaired after he refused an alcohol test, police said.

But this week, Bellas' lawyer argued that he was biking on a golf course.

Because that is private land, the charges have been dropped.

Bellas was the primary prosecutor in the Elisa Baker case for charges related to the disappearance and death of 10-year-old Zahra Baker.  Baker was sentenced to 18 years in prison in connection with the death of Zahra.

Baker's stepdaughter, Zahra, went missing last fall. Most of Zahra's body was found dismembered in parts of Caldwell County in October and November.
